Teachers - Poetry For Children - Characteristics and Examples

I believe that one of the most leading concepts about poetry is that, "Like a song, poetry is meant to be heard" (Larrick, 1987, p. 20). While good prose can whether be read aloud or silently, poetry nearly always needs to be read aloud. That poetry needs to be heard can be attributed to the characteristics of poetry that distinguish poetry from prose, i.e., rhythm, sound patterns, figurativeness, compactness, and emotional intensity (Lukens, 1990). I will scrutinize each of these in more depth, below:

An example that I often use when I am first teaching the attribute of rhythm to students is Carl Sandburg's poem, "Was Ever a Dream A Drum?" [Be sure to read this aloud!]

Audio Books For Kids

Was ever a dream a drum

Teachers - Poetry For Children - Characteristics and Examples

or a drum a dream?

Can a drummer drum a dream

or a dreamer dream a drum?

The drum in a dream

pounds loud to the dreamer.

Now the moon tonight over Indiana

is a fire-drum of a phantom dreamer.

    Carl Sandburg in Hopkins, 1982

While reading it aloud, I bang on a desk or the book or my lap to make the sound of a drum beat that goes along with what I am reading. Then I read it again, only this time, the students pound out the rhythm on their own laps or desks.

"Was Ever a Dream a Drum" also can be used to demonstrate how poetry uses sound patterns, that is, words as sound. However, my popular poem to use is "The Man in the Marmalade Hat Arrives," from the Newbery Award-winning book by Nancy Willard, A Visit to William Blake's Inn: Poems for Innocent and Experienced Travelers. Just the first stanza (read aloud, of course) gives you an idea of how Willard used sound patterns in this poem:

The man in the marmalade hat

arrived in the middle of March,

equipped with a bottle of starch

to straighten the bends in the road, he said.

He carried a pail and mop.

A most incommodious load, he said,

and he asked for a room at the top.

Children ask to hear that poem over and over--so that they can play with the language of the poem. Just savor saying "a most incommodious load" several times--and you, too, will be hooked!

A third characteristic of poetry is the author's use of words as meaning, i.e., figurativeness. Worth's All the Small Poems book is filled with examples you can use for this characteristic. A fabulous specimen is her poem entitled "Safety Pin." [You may want to have a security pin to look at while you read and enjoy this poem!]

Closed, it sleeps

On its side

Quietly,

The silver

Image

Of some

Small fish;

Opened, it snaps

Its tail out

Like a thin

Shrimp, and looks

At the sharp

Point with a

Surprised eye.

So much image...so few words!

....Which leads to the next characteristic that children need to know about poetry--its compactness. I once heard Virginia Hamilton, the author of young adult novels, exchanging views with her husband, poet Arnold Adoff, about which one of them had to work harder. The issue was whether it was more difficult to say what you want to say in 15,000 words...or in 15 words. The issue was not resolved, and probably never will be, but students can learn to appreciate the care with which a poet's words are chosen. Lukens (1990) says,

The critical distinction between prose and poetry is compactness. A singular word in poetry says far more than a singular word in prose; the connotations and images hint at, imply, and recommend other meanings. (p. 187).

Because poetry is so parsimonious with its words, each one carries a great deal of weight. With no pun intended, look at (and read aloud) part of the poem "Elephant" by Barbara Juster Esbensen:

The word is too heavy

to lift ...

Elephant

He must have invented it

himself. This is a lumbering

gray word the ears of it

are huge and flap like loose

wings a word with

wrinkled knees and toes

like boxing gloves....

A poem that I often read to upper elementary and middle school students is from Arnold Adoff's book Sports Pages. It illustrates the last characteristic of poetry that I will be discussing here: emotional intensity. One poem in this book tells about a boy who twisted his knee in a football game. The next poem begins this way:

My Knee Is Only Sprained,

is only swollen, and

the physician says I will be

fine. I'll play again.

He says this as he

sits on his padded

leather chair that

can swivel 360 de

grees.

Oh

why can't knees?

Once children know about these characteristics of poetry (i.e., rhythm, sound patterns, figurativeness, compactness, and emotional intensity), they will enjoy the challenge of finding poems that exemplify one or more of the characteristics. Their appreciation of poetry is enhanced straight through their further knowledge. They are ready to touch poetry more fully.

Rap Music - Good for our Children's Ears?

So we all know the rap music manufactures is big business. How big? genuinely in the billions of dollars. But is this rap music--and more specifically the genre referred to as gangsta rap--good for our children's ears and moreover society? common sense would dictate that the last question is quite a rhetorical one.

Now in defense of rap artists, I understand that this genre of music presents a car of expression for some who might have had no other avenue for venting about the horrors of their lives. For many ghetto kids, rap music has provided a car to flee abject poverty and horrendous living conditions. No one can fault a kid--deprived of the basic needs to get on in life--for using rap music as a way to leave an undesirable world behind. But at what price to others is this exodus from the ghetto accomplished?

Audio Books For Kids

Indeed America thrives on and relishes violence in movies, video games, and television. As a nation, we have developed an insatiable appetite for all kinds of negative media blasts, and horrific news makes headlines much faster and in greater numbers than determined news. But why? It seems that humans thrive on bad news--even when we hear bad things about friends and relatives. The Duke de Rochefoucauld, celebrated for his witty maxims and epigrammatic writings, said that in the adversity of our best friends, we find something that does not necessarily displease us. From an empirical perspective, I think the duke might have something.

Thus given our appetite for destruction, it would seem natural that the genre of heavy rap music, with its attendant profanity and hardcore lyrics, would be a welcome addition to America's repertoire of negative conditioning. Moreover, since such negativity drives big business, it would seem foolhardy to pass on such a profitable genre. Yet still the question becomes: Is this spate of nihilism, which currently drowns the media, working for us or against us?

Rap music is just an postponement of the pervasive decay of collective mores and ethics in our culture and genuinely the world's. Saddening is the conception that some believe they must stoop to this level of self-expression to make it big in the world. But I don't blame the ghetto kid; I blame the ever-increasing laziness of individuals to learn about their maker and to respect His integrity. Maybe if we each take a stronger stand to shed some determined energy in the world, then the world might glorify less the spread of negative energy. Now that's a wishful thought.

How To Get Children interested In Reading

Most population already know the benefits of reading. population learn by reading. population also have fun and feel fulfilled by reading. As a person reads more and more, the person's literary skills improve. Reading makes population into good readers, writers, and speakers.

Unfortunately, children do not read much anymore. Because most population never get curious in reading as children, as adults they also do not read much. Some polls even say that the majority of population in the United States do not read anymore. You probably want your children to pick up the beneficial hobby of reading. Let me advise a few ways that you can get children curious in reading.

Audio Books For Kids

Less Tv - You can get children to read more by getting them to watch less Tv. Children read less because they lazily waste their time rotting their mind in front of a Tv--a behavior they commonly pick up from their parents. Think choosing not to have a Tv, or at least do not have cable. Even if you do have a Tv, watch less yourself because children model their behavior after the adults in their life.

Suggest Books That Would Interest The Child - You can also get children to read by helping them find books they like. You can do this by bringing the children to a library or book store and letting them pick out books that interest them. You can also advise books about topics of interest to the child. For example, if you have a child who likes to play soccer, Think suggesting a book about soccer to the child.

Do Not Push Too Hard - If you try to force children to read, or if you otherwise pressure them to much, you will make them dislike reading. Try not to make reading seem like a chore. Instead, you want to get the children to read on their own free-will. You want them to read voluntarily because they see the fun and self-benefit of it. Forcing your children to read will make them into good slaves who like to obey orders, but it will not make them into good readers who like to read.

Teach Children To Read Well - Children will not want to read if they cannot do it or if they cannot do it well. population like to do what they do well. If you have a talent for singing, you would like to sing. In contrast, if you sing horribly, you will not waste your time embarrassing yourself at it. Children will want to read more if they feel like they read well. Teach them how to read good in a unavoidable environment. Additionally, compliment their reading abilities so that they feel proud and unavoidable of their reading abilities. If they feel proud and unavoidable of their reading abilities, the children will want to read more.

Use those methods to get your children to read more. Also, feel free to think of more methods.

Whatever you do, good luck and have fun!

Compact discs have also had an impact on the music book industry. For population who do not have an Mp3 player that they can use to take their files with them, Cd audio ones are the next option. "How does that resonate with you?"

"That sounds good to me."

Below are some of the generic signs to look out for, if a man has a beloved Auditory leaning and communication style.

They will usually,

o breathe from the middle of the chest, in divergence to the optic man who tends to breathe from the upper part of the chest

o talk to themselves as they are thinking, even fascinating their lips of not vocalising.

You may say: "Well I do that, and I'm Visual". Auditory population tend to do that more frequently, as a matter of habit, and they tend to do it with sound.

o be in fact distracted by noise

This is no surprise as they commonly have very acute hearing; noise will sway their potential to concentrate.

o repeat things back to you easily

This is wonderful. In divergence to optic people, who will tend to put their own stamp on what you have said, the Auditory man can verbatim repeat back what you said, production communication less complicated, clearer and less time-consuming.

o learn by listening

They are the ones who love the instructional audio Cds, audio books and Dvds.

o like talking on the phone.

This is quite a virtue nowadays in construction and maintaining rapport, as most population prefer to use emails as a means to 'converse', which loses the personal touch of a phone call.

o memorize by steps, procedures, and sequences

They are very adept at rattling off lists.

o like to be told how they are doing

This is not an ego thing; it is just for explication that they are on the right track.

o acknowledge to a collection of tones of voice or set of words

Boring, monotone presenters take heed. Auditory population acknowledge to modulated voices with tonal variance.

You will lose their interest if your presentations are dull and monotonous, no matter how fantastic the content.

o be concerned in what you have to say

These are often your best listeners. They in fact want to hear what you have to say.

They listen not just hear.

Initially, devote a week to observing the Auditory style as you spin with population at work and socially.

It in fact makes Rapport construction a simpler process.

You will get to the point when you don't have to even think about observing people, the subconscious mind takes over and you do it automatically.

Have fun with it.

Are you getting Pod Casts yet?

Podcasts are similar to audio books but they are basically audio blogs. Like blogs they are regularly free. Check your popular blog to see if they offer audio blog casts. If not, how about some of these:

  • The Bbc radio center online allows you to listen to broadcasts.
  • If you go to earideas.com you can access a variety of audio which includes communal and other broadcasts, magazines, newspapers, museums and more. There are daily updates and you can subscribe, download or listen at the site.
  • At getapodcast.com you can do your own search. You can also quest for free podcasts in Yahoo and Google.
  • Do a quest for internet archive: old time radio to get to the site of the golden age of radio. I use this site often as a supplement to literature. It is fun to listen to the old broadcasts from archive.org

These suggestions should keep you supplied with all the audio you need, but if it is not sufficient try a quest for free audio books and you will get lots of suggestions from a myriad of sites over the net.

Christmas pudding is a favorite sweet or cake associated with Christmas. There are many recipes available today that the whole family can participate in and enjoy a fun old-time tradition while creating fun and cherished memories. Here is a tiny history about our favorite plum pudding. Why not introduce this old-time tradition back into your family? however for health and safety reasons you may wish to make the trinkets out of hard biscuit mix or buy candy shapes rather than use metal or coins. Read on ...

Originally this favorite Christmas sweet was established in England and dates back to the Middle Ages. It was made of plum porridge consisting of chopped cows tongues, meat broth, raisins and spices. The reason it was called 'Plum Pudding' is because the word 'plum' referred to putting all the ingredients into a cloth that is tied at the top, then boiled until the ingredients are 'plum' which meant enlarged so that it would fill out the cloth. Once unwrapped it was sliced like a cake. Today it is still favorite in many countries but the meat has gone and it is more like a sweetly spiced, heavily fruited moist cake normally warmed and eaten after the main festive meal.

In the 17th century, a quaint old custom for Christmas plum pudding appeared. Tradition says that the pudding must be stirred by every member of the family from east to west in honor of The Three Kings. Silver charms and three penny pieces were favorite to be hidden in the pudding during the cooking. Whilst eating if you dug out a coin you were deemed to be wealthy the following year, a ring you would be married, a thimble an old maid and a button a bachelor. This tradition was enjoyed with much teasing and merry-making!
